Loneliness in Rwandan Society

 Story by IMENA Gislain

In Rwanda today, loneliness is becoming a serious issue affecting people from different age groups and backgrounds.

Despite the growth of technology and increased social media usage, many individuals are still struggling with emotional isolation.

According to information from The New Times, urbanization and busy lifestyles have contributed to a growing sense of disconnection among young people, especially those living in cities like Kigali. Many spend hours online but lack meaningful face-to-face interactions.

A report by Igihe.com also highlighted that the elderly population in rural areas is at high risk of loneliness. With younger family members moving to urban centers for work and education, older adults often find themselves living alone for long periods without regular social contact.

Experts in Rwanda’s mental health sector have raised concerns about the effects of loneliness. According to Inyarwanda, psychologists say prolonged loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. They recommend more community support systems and awareness campaigns.

Efforts are being made to address the problem. According to Igihe, some local organizations and religious groups are now organizing events and counseling programs aimed at encouraging social connection and emotional support.
Loneliness is a silent struggle, but with more public awareness and community involvement, there is hope that Rwandan society can create stronger bonds and reduce the emotional distance many people feel.
